Target Set to Achieve 10 Million Ton Capacity for Oil
Services at Imam Khomeini Port

MRUDNEWS- the event recognized the private sector’s role during special operational conditions and critical work periods, while emphasizing the development of storage capacities, improvement of operational indicators, and strengthening of the oil products supply chain at Imam Khomeini Port as one of the country’s most important commercial and oil ports.

Behrouz Aghaei, Director General of Khuzestan Ports and Maritime, stated that during special conditions, the collective of port and oil sector activists managed to accomplish difficult tasks through unity. “This meeting was held to appreciate those who stood alongside the Ports and maritime Organization with full strength during the recent critical period and played an effective role under special operational conditions,” he said.

He added that for the second half of the year, given the forecasted increase in vessel traffic, necessary planning has been done to prepare tanks and infrastructure to prevent any stagnation or disruption in loading and unloading operations, ensuring port operations continue with maximum efficiency.

Davoud Chegini, Deputy for Port and Economic Affairs of Khuzestan Ports and Maritime, presented a report on Imam Khomeini Port’s performance in recent years, emphasizing the importance of developing oil infrastructure and improving operational indicators. He stated that the current capacity of oil product tanks at Imam Khomeini Port is approximately 550,000 tons, which, through planned developments and ongoing investments, will increase to about one million tons over the next two to three years.

Referring to the port’s important role in the supply chain of essential goods, oil products, and industrial raw materials, he added: “The target set is to achieve a service capacity of approximately 10 million tons in oil products, which requires upgrading loading and unloading equipment, increasing operational speed, developing tank infrastructure, and strengthening rail and road transport networks.”

Chegini also emphasized the need for closer private sector cooperation with the Ports Organization in utilizing smart systems including the IPAS system, compliance with safety requirements and operational standards, and submitting investment plans for developing oil terminals.

Aghaei stressed the need to identify and resolve process bottlenecks, stating: “Operational processes from vessel arrival to the start of operations must be reviewed to minimize vessel waiting time. Given the sensitivity of oil operations, compliance with safety and environmental requirements must be prioritized so that Imam Khomeini Port maintains its position as a safe, sustainable port with international standards.”

In conclusion, Aghaei emphasized the importance of active marketing and improving the business environment, stating: “The necessary infrastructure is in place at the port. Now, by utilizing existing capacities and constructive interaction between the Organization and the private sector, new commercial opportunities must be attracted to accelerate the development of port and maritime activities.”
